I Checked 17 Real Shopify Stores' Themes, Here's What Actually Ranks

I built a free Shopify Theme Detector and ran it against 17 real Shopify stores across beauty, baby, and apparel. Here's what the data actually shows about themes, Dawn, and SEO.

17 Shopify stores checked for theme and SEO, what actually ranks

Everyone assumes Dawn, Shopify's free default theme, is bad for SEO because it's free. I built a tool to check instead of guessing.

The Tool

I built a Shopify Theme Detector: paste any Shopify store URL and it tells you the exact theme it's running (name, schema version, whether it's a paid Theme Store theme or a custom build), plus a quick SEO health check, canonical tags, structured data, image alt coverage, and whether the above-fold image is hurting your LCP.

Method

I ran the tool against 17 real, live Shopify stores across beauty, baby products, and apparel, picking well-known DTC brands rather than cherry-picking ones I expected to score well. Three additional stores I tried were excluded: two blocked the request with bot protection, and one had migrated to a headless storefront with no classic theme data to read.

Findings

Out of 17 stores checked:

  • Custom vs. Theme Store themes: only 4 of 17 (24%) were running an off-the-shelf paid Theme Store theme (Expanse, Split, and two Dawn-based Theme Store listings). The other 13 (76%) were running fully custom or heavily forked themes.
  • Missing schema: 14 of 17 (82%) had no FAQPage or BreadcrumbList structured data at all, even on stores with large marketing budgets.
  • LCP image handling: 8 of 17 (47%) were lazy-loading their above-the-fold hero image, which actively delays Largest Contentful Paint. Almost half.
  • Image alt coverage was the widest spread I saw. One major beauty brand had alt text on just 6 of 50 images (12%). Another had 428 of 471 (91%). Same platform, wildly different discipline.

The Surprising Bit

The 4 paid Theme Store themes in this sample averaged an 8.5/10 score. The 13 custom/forked themes averaged 8.8/10, slightly higher. And the Dawn-based stores specifically (three of them, one running Dawn straight, two running heavily customized forks) averaged 8.3/10, solidly mid-pack, not the SEO liability people assume.

The real pattern wasn't the theme at all. It was operational discipline: stores that generate content fast and touch templates less often (rushed "launch" and promo-named theme versions, several literally titled things like "Fall Homepage" or a launch campaign) tended to skip alt text and schema. The theme is not what tanks a Shopify store's SEO. How consistently the team maintains it is.
